Last week, the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition’s Dr. David Nelson spoke with WCJB-TV20’s Chris Gilmore about recent treatment advances and screening recommendations for Hepatitis C.
“This year has seen a real transformation in opportunities,” Dr. Nelson explains, “It use to be we would give people injections of chemotherapy for a year and maybe have a 50/50 chance of cure. This year for the first time a few months ago, the first all-pill therapies were approved that allow very simple, safe, 12-week treatments with cure rates above 90% so the majority of people can be cured and their liver can actually heal.”
