About Amitabh Kumar
I am Dr. Amitabh Kumar, a board-certified gastroenterologist with more than 25 years of experience caring for patients with digestive and liver conditions. I currently serve as a clinical associate professor at the University of Florida and treat patients in Gainesville, Florida.
My training began at the University of Texas at Austin, followed by medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. I completed my internal medicine residency at the University of Connecticut and my gastroenterology fellowship at UF.
I have been fortunate to learn from and collaborate with many national and global experts in my field, who have since become good friends. I especially enjoy applying this knowledge at the bedside to help my patients while teaching the next generation of outstanding clinicians.
Over the course of my career, I have had the privilege of caring for patients across Florida and Georgia, both in academic and private practice settings.
I enjoy seeing a wide breadth of gastroenterology patients, and my interests include Barrett’s esophagus, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastric intestinal metaplasia, gastric cancer, Helicobacter pylori infection and complications, celiac disease, malabsorption, colon cancer screening, upper endoscopy/esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and colonoscopy. I also specialize in small bowel bacterial overgrowth, a condition I have researched and published extensively.
In addition to my clinical work, I have served on hospital committees, directed medical education events and volunteered with organizations that provide care to underserved communities.
When I am not practicing medicine, I enjoy Taekwondo (I hold a black belt), collecting wine and art, reading and traveling with my family.
I believe in taking time to listen and offering evidence-based care while empowering patients to understand and manage their digestive health.
